SLOWLY, AGAINST THE BEAT was conceived to be a very low budget movie that could be made in the 100-150K range. We are all very excited about it as its themes and conceit are both very current. It tells the story of Dragan Thomas, a middle aged man in Louisville, Kentucky who finds himself divorced and unemployed and somewhat desperate for companionship and money. After spending lot of time on the internet, he decides to make an amateur point of view porn video. The film begins with him placing an ad on the internet and chronicles his tortured journey to realize his tattered ambition. The film is shot entirely from the perspective of the camera Dragan has hidden in a vintage Abraham Lincoln type stove pipe hat he wears. The whole movie works like a kind of video diary, where each entry chronicles another effort, all of which end in disaster, most perilously with Maryon a woman who Dragan falls precariously in love with. Given the subject matter and much of the sexual content, it is easy to mistake this film for something it is not. As his efforts to beguile women fail, so too does his camera work. Although the scenes are often prurient, what we are trying to make is a film with sexual themes but relatively limited sexual content. It is much more a film about desperation of the American sexual condition and the struggle to make connections, any kind of connections, between consenting adults. As this film does not require much capital, we are looking to go into production on this before Summer and are currently casting.
